Renter's Insurance Columbia MORenter’s insurance is much like a homeowner’s policy except it is tailored to the specific needs of a renter, instead of the property owner. The coverage purchased by the property owner, or landlord, will not protect any personal property owned by tenants. Renter’s insurance provides personal property protection against losses by covered perils and provides personal liability coverage.

Renter’s Insurance Policy Coverage

  • Business pursuits, property, or professional services

Taking Inventory

Some people may not feel their belongings are valuable enough to warrant purchasing a policy, but things like computers, electronics, household furnishings, and clothing can add up quickly. Not only does a Renter’s insurance policy cover personal belongings and tenant negligence, it also provides temporary living expenses if the insured location becomes uninhabitable due to fire, tornado, or any other covered loss.

If you need any assistance compiling a list of your belongings, please use this helpful Personal Property Inventory Brochure offered by Auto-Owners Insurance: Auto-Owners Insurance Personal Property Inventory Brochure.

Do You Have a Roommate?

Please note that when multiple, unrelated tenants share one apartment, they would most likely each need to purchase their own policy. A renter’s insurance policy will only provide coverage for the insured, or person named on the policy contract. The definition of “insured” does extend to a spouse or household relative, but not roommates. A few companies do have the ability to endorse coverage for a roommate, so be sure to check with your agent.

The Right Renter’s Policy for You

Both tenants and landlords benefit from the purchase of a renter’s insurance policy. Like homeowner’s insurance, people have the option of pairing their renter’s policy and auto policy with the same company to maximize discounts.
